Crude forms of pith helmets had existed as early as the s, but it was around that the pith helmet became popular with military personnel in Europe’s tropical colonies.
The Franco-Prussian War had popularized the German Pickelhaube , which may have influenced the distinctive design of the pith helmet. Such developments may have merged with a traditional design from the Philippines, the salakot. The alternative name salacot also written salakhoff appears frequently in Spanish and French sources; it comes from the Tagalog word salacsac or Salaksak. During the Revolution in the Philippine-American War , Emilio Aguinaldo and the Philippine revolutionary military used to wear the pith helmet borrowed from the Spaniards alongside the straw hat and the native salakot.
Originally made of pith with small peaks bills at the front and back, the helmet was covered by white cloth, often with a cloth band or puggaree around it, and small holes for ventilation.

Colloquially, it was called the shrapnel helmet , battle bowler , Tommy helmet , tin hat , and in the United States the doughboy helmet. It was also known as the dishpan hat, tin pan hat, washbasin, battle bowler when worn by officers , and Kelly helmet. At the outbreak of World War I , none of the combatants provided steel helmets to their troops. Soldiers of most nations went into battle wearing cloth, felt, or leather headgear that offered no protection from modern weapons.
The huge number of lethal head wounds that modern artillery weapons inflicted upon the French Army led them to introduce the first modern steel helmets in the summer of These rudimentary helmets were soon replaced by the Model Adrian helmet , designed by August-Louis Adrian. At about the same time, the British War Office had seen a similar need for steel helmets. They decided that it was not strong enough and too complex to be swiftly manufactured. These were effectively a wide-brimmed hat made of steel and used particularly by the English in the wars against the French in the Middle Ages.

Romans used Greek designs, including elaborate horsetail plumes; crested gladiator helmets were made of hammered bronze. European medieval helmets evolved from the seventh to seventeenth centuries as part of body armor, beginning with a boiled leather conical casque spangenhelm worn by tribal warriors over a hood of mail. During the feudal era, a large, heavy iron pot heaume protected the head from lances in chivalry tournaments, and the towering steel snouted visor basinet was worn in battle.
Archers and pikemen used lighter, more flexible helmets with neck guards during the Hundred Years’ War c. A so-called dastaar has traditionally been mandatory for all male Sikhs although women can also choose to wear one. It represents honor, self-respect, courage, spirituality, and piety. Thursday’s ruling backed a verdict from a lower court in the southern city of Constance, which had found that driving a motorcycle was not essential for the claimant, as he also had access to a car and a delivery van.
The Leipzig court argued that the obligation to wear a helmet not only protects the driver but also keeps other drivers from being traumatized if they cause heavy injury to someone driving without a helmet. The court also said a driver wearing a helmet would be better placed to help others in case of an accident. In the UK as well as several provinces in Canada, Sikhs are exempt from wearing helmets on motorcycles or hard hats on building sites.
